14 January 2010: waves … Lordy… As I finally get ready to show my At Sea work next month, the waves are all around me

1 January 2010: sacred failure for the new year … a lovely bit on excess and sacrifice by Noah Berlatsky

29 December 2009: Romeo, O, um, Romeo

Another beautiful celebration of failure, from NPR

29 November 2009: the collective unconscious … This morning I am rather obsessed with samesies

30 October 2009: Roy DeCarava: December 9, 1919 – October 27, 2009 … .

20 October 2009: more failure and fakery … Erroll Morris’ wonderful accounts about past and present photographic falsehoods

10 October 2009: on failure, distilled … If Photography is born from failure, then surely it must have always carried failure in its genes.

29 September 2009: how to & how not to … I am trying to finish editing a small piece I wrote about Photography and Failure, distilling some of the things I’ve been talking about with all sorts of people this year

17 September 2009: one dollar camera … Won Park. One Dollar Camera.

12 September 2009: inspiration … from marriedtothesea.com

4 September 2009: sea test … .

3 September 2009: silhouette … .

26 July 2009: black waves … .

17 July 2009: pictureville … My mentor Christopher James has reminded me of something he wrote about the changes in Photographic Technology

9 July 2009: the letter … Gum Bichromate. Penland, 2009.

8 July 2009: wow … 12:34:56 on 7/8/09

7 July 2009: the revolution … Last Thursday I had a Penland Coffee Shop meeting to discuss the coming plans for an upgrade to the Photo Studio in Northlight

5 July 2009: open road … Leaving Penland happened in the same blur as arriving.

3 July 2009: done … Thursday was our final day of work, culminating in the big Scholarship Auction after dinner

2 July 2009: slapdash dandies … Since no one will be here on Saturday, Wednesday the 1st will be our Independence Celebration, and the School and Community Parade that goes with it.

1 July 2009: stay, relax … I am either a really great teacher, or the absolute worst.

30 June 2009: prussian blue … Yesterday, Monday, was another perfect day – not only the weather, which has been ridiculously lovely, but also the work and the exhaustion that comes with it.

28 June 2009: more … (another shot from Friday)

27 June 2009: perfect daze … I am no longer worried about the Social Engineering part of teaching, particularly after Friday’s class.

26 June 2009: overexposure … Thursday was supposed to be at least half a day off, but when I got to the studio at 9 (much better rested, thank you very much) almost the whole class was there, already printing.

25 June 2009: summer color … 7:30 in the morning came hard yesterday. And what’s worse, 7:30 actually came a whole hour earlier when the crows decided to stage a shrieking dance-off on the roof

24 June 2009: color burn … Whoa what a day was Tuesday. Up at 6:30 with the crows so I could shower, write and plan before breakfast, then right up to the studio to prep.

23 June 2009: vesuvian fire … Monday was a ridiculously good day.

22 June 2009: mourning at night … A very long Sunday yesterday, but beautiful… I spent the whole day preparing, up early and in the studio. Since I’m taking over a class I didn’t plan, there were many things I needed to test

21 June 2009: the full naught … The gods must think I’m stupid, they way they place the most obvious symbols in my way.

3 February 2009: some notes on the art of failure (unedited) … (Given at the f295 Seminar on 21st-Century Photography, 18 January 2009 at B&H)

20 November 2008: red … .

27 October 2008: on borrowed time … 16 chapters in and Peter Plagens comes up with one of his gems of insight, buried deep within a cringe-worthy roman à clef
