28 June 2009: more … (another shot from Friday)
27 June 2009: perfect daze … I am no longer worried about the Social Engineering part of teaching, particularly after Friday’s class.
26 June 2009: overexposure … Thursday was supposed to be at least half a day off, but when I got to the studio at 9 (much better rested, thank you very much) almost the whole class was there, already printing.
25 June 2009: summer color … 7:30 in the morning came hard yesterday. And what’s worse, 7:30 actually came a whole hour earlier when the crows decided to stage a shrieking dance-off on the roof
24 June 2009: color burn … Whoa what a day was Tuesday. Up at 6:30 with the crows so I could shower, write and plan before breakfast, then right up to the studio to prep.
23 June 2009: vesuvian fire … Monday was a ridiculously good day.
22 June 2009: mourning at night … A very long Sunday yesterday, but beautiful… I spent the whole day preparing, up early and in the studio. Since I’m taking over a class I didn’t plan, there were many things I needed to test
21 June 2009: the full naught … The gods must think I’m stupid, they way they place the most obvious symbols in my way.
3 February 2009: some notes on the art of failure (unedited) … (Given at the f295 Seminar on 21st-Century Photography, 18 January 2009 at B&H)
27 October 2008: on borrowed time … 16 chapters in and Peter Plagens comes up with one of his gems of insight, buried deep within a cringe-worthy roman à clef
5 October 2008: white night … Last night was La Nuit Blanche here in Paris and despite some rather disappointing Art Events I had quite a good time.
3 October 2008: the whirlwind tour … there’s just so much to this city, and I am wowed by it every day
26 September 2008: oh, old man … I’m embarrassed for Peter Plagens
21 September 2008: thank yous good and bad … For inspiration, it’s hard to beat a solid conversation with a fellow Idealist
16 September 2008: back to school … I didn’t realize I could get a €30 artist’s pass to the Louvre
15 September 2008: on video … I know I’ve said it before, but I hardly ever like video art. It’s too often either Slow Boring Cinema in an uncomfortable room, or a Nonsense Loop that leaves me mystified
12 September 2008: still wandering the louvre … The Louvre is, indeed, insane. There’s just so much to see – and so much of it is amazing – that it confounded my usual Museum Attack Plan
11 September 2008: a louvre scorecard … .
10 September 2008: yer doin it wrong … It’s taken me more than a week to start coming down from New York Speed, and I’ve got a long ways to go
9 September 2008: a small collection of stains … .
8 September 2008: in and out of place … Sometimes a man hits upon a place to which he mysteriously feels that he belongs
7 September 2008: the ninety-nines … For a foreign place, Paris sure feels like home
6 September 2008: get lost … I was pretty disappointed in the Pompidou’s collection, but I was really just here to see Miroslav Tichy
5 September 2008: little joys … I’ve been eating well in Paris, of course
4 September 2008: here it is … I think I’m crashing today…
3 September 2008: the marble faun … I could not resist. Even tho it’s rainy and gray, and I feel hungover from traveling, I had to get out into the City today.
2 September 2008: arrête … Well I made it to Paris. After a hectic year marked by dreams of escape I’ve finally come, jet-lagged and over-tired, to a full stop.
1 September 2008: à la recherche du temps trouvé … Well that was fun, sorting through the artwork that has meant so much to me. I thought I might just pull a few key ones together to remind me why I’m an artist in the first place, but instead I’ve opened the floodgates
31 August 2008: collecting xxv … Julia Margaret Cameron
