in the saltbox
I’ve been deep in the studio, carving Salt, making Salt Prints, and thinking Salty Thoughts… The floor is a brand-new kind of mess, and I taste salt everywhere. I find myself eating chips and pretzels to snack, and I casually oversalted my dinner.
I’m in way over my head with this small sculpture I’m making, having not much experience or skill in carving a realistic form (and in a delicate medium) but, nevertheless, my November show is coming together. Though I need the money, I’m turning down other work to get through this li’l wave, at least until I teach again. The rain these past few days certainly helps things along. No need to go outside and sample the preview of Fall… it’ll be here soon enough.
Well, ok, I do try to get out at least once a day, or rather, night… Last night I made it to Film Forum for a couple of silent movies and, later, some heavy street-philosophy with my friend Ivan. The night before I got to hear the music of some old friends, including the rocking sounds of Americans in France. The show was at Envoy Gallery, which had a lot of great stuff on the wall in a group exhibition called “Through the Lies of Your Dark, Dark Eyes.” My not-so-dark eyes kept wandering from the music to the art – particularly the odd collections of objects by the French collaborative France Fiction, and some lovely small drawings by Susanna Vapnek.
Envoy reminded me to get my ass over to the Lower East Side galleries more often. This is, of course, the New Art Destination, what with the New Museum re-opening, and dozens of other galleries opening (or about to open) just this year. And I hear some bigger galleries from Chelsea are grabbing spaces in the neighborhood as well. Here comes the Next Wave…
